Abstract
The shared view of the majority of commentators in explaining the spiritual concepts of the verses is the metaphorical description of these concepts, which falls within the framework of rhetorical studies and is regarded as part of the factors contributing to the Qur’an’s miraculous nature. The issue addressed in the present study is that, in traditional exegesis, metaphorical expressions with identical keywords are provided with various and differing explanations. The present study examines and analyzes the components of “distance” and “size” in the Qur’an’s metaphorical expressions on the basis of the theory of “Conceptual Metaphor.” The scope of the study includes verses that describe spiritual concepts through the aid of the two components under consideration. In this approach, all metaphorical expressions in the Qur’an that have been conceptualized through the components of distance and size were examined as a cognitive pattern and within the framework of a semantic category. It was determined that the component of “size” in the source domain of metaphorical expressions signifies the importance of the concept in the target domain, while the component of “distance” in the source domain of metaphorical expressions signifies the value of the concept in the target domain from the perspective of the Qur’anic worldview. In other words, although the components of “distance” and “size” have been employed to describe various subjects in the target domain, the purpose is to express the two concepts of “importance” and “value” within the subjects of the target domain. Accordingly, integrating and unifying the reasons for the use of the components of distance and size in the description of spiritual concepts provides evidence for the coherence of the use of literary devices in the text of the Holy Qur’an. Furthermore, demonstrating this coherence also resolves some of the problems arising from traditional literary exegesis.
