A Typology of Patience in the Holy Quran: From Passive Forbearance to Intelligent Steadfastness

Abstract
Within the epistemological framework of the Holy Quran, patience transcends mere individual moral virtue; it serves as a vital strategy for safeguarding human dignity and enhancing resilience in the face of existential challenges. This concept constitutes the core of steadfastness on the path of truth and the management of crises in both personal and social spheres. The central question of this study is: based on what criteria does the Quran categorize patience, and how—through this typology—does it transform the meaning of patience from passive endurance into intelligent steadfastness"? Employing a descriptive-analytical method and drawing upon library resources and Quranic teachings, this research explores the subject. The findings reveal that the Quranic typology of patience comprises three key layers, progressing from inner forbearance toward intelligent steadfastness: first, the layer of the context of action (patience in obedience, in refraining from sin, and in the face of calamity); second, the layer of nature and quality (sabr-e jamil [beautiful patience] and istibar [resolute perseverance]); and finally, the layer of purpose and ultimate goal (patience for the sake of God and for salvation). In this model, by linking patience with insight, the patient individual exercises an active form of patience to manage affairs wisely and transform the status quo into a desired state.
