Abstract
The verses of Wilayah (Guardianship) in the Holy Quran are among the
most significant Quranic documents for the Imamate of Imam Ali
(peace be upon him). Shi'a narrative exegeses, especially Tafsir al-
Qummi (by Ali ibn Ibrahim al-Qummi) and Tafsir al-Burhan (by
Sayyid Hashim al-Bahrani), relying on the traditions of the Ahl al-Bayt
(peace be upon them), play a key role in elucidating these verses. This
research, employing a descriptive-analytical method and a comparative
approach, re-examines the position of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in
six verses of Wilayah (the verses of Guardianship, Purification,
Mubahalah, Proclamation, Ulul-Amr, and the Perfection of Religion)
within these two exegeses. The findings indicate that both
commentaries, citing narrative occasions of revelation, regard these
verses as referring to the divine guardianship and Imamate of Imam Ali
(peace be upon him). However, Tafsir al-Burhan, with its
comprehensive and tradition-based approach, offers a greater diversity
of narrations, whereas Tafsir al-Qummi, by selecting early traditions,
emphasizes content authenticity. On the other hand, a detailed analysis
of the verses in these two exegeses reveals that: the Verse of Wilayah
indicates the obligation of obeying Imam Ali (peace be upon him) as
the "divine Wali (Guardian)"; the Verse of Purification establishes the
absolute infallibility of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them); the Verse
of Mubahalah affirms the status of Ali (peace be upon him) as the "self
of the Prophet"; and the Verse of the Perfection of Religion introduces
Wilayah as the "final obligation" and the complement of religion. The
conclusion is that the Holy Quran, in its narrative reading, is the most
important source for proving the Imamate, and these two commentaries,
within a single epistemological chain, establish the Quranic foundations
of Wilayah.
