Abstract

Classifying Quranic verses based on various criteria enhances human understanding within the field of Quranic studies and opens up new avenues of inquiry. One of the most significant classifications in this realm is the division of verses into *muhkam* (unequivocal/decisive) and *mutashabih* (ambiguous/allegorical). While the decisive role of *muhkam* verses is evident to scholars of divine sciences—particularly in Islamic jurisprudence—a similarly pivotal status must be accorded to *mutashabih* verses within the realm of theology (*kalam*). This is because the primary points of divergence among Islamic schools of thought regarding theology and subsidiary religious disciplines stem from differing interpretations and understandings of these ambiguous verses. Consequently, the importance of categorizing *mutashabih* verses and analyzing their nature and implications within Islamic theology is manifest. Recognizing this significance, the present article employs a qualitative method based on a descriptive-analytical approach to address this subject. The findings suggest that these verses can be categorized into monotheistic, attributive, jurisprudential, and logical types. However, the primary criteria enabling a more accurate and truthful understanding of *mutashabih* verses involve two approaches: interpreting them in conjunction with other ambiguous verses, and—crucially—interpreting them in light of *muhkam* verses, ensuring that the latter remain uncompromised. The discussion further reveals that scholarly disagreements regarding the interpretation of *mutashabih* verses sometimes transcend sectarian boundaries; indeed, Sunni and Shia scholars may occasionally share the same perspective and align in their reasoning on specific interpretations.
